The Lemon

I walked into the pub tonight and, on the bar, were two jugs of water, each with a lemon gently bobbing away. At the base of each jug was a sprinkling of loose change, but nowt to say why there were there.

Was it modern art? Had people a dire need for over-sized finger bowls? Maybe there was a Gin and Tonic competition nearby?

After several pints, and the appearance of a tiny, framed, sign by way of explanation, all became clear. They were there for charity; it was the Seagull’s way to help out the victims of the tsunami disaster.

Balance 20 pence on the lemon; if it stays there for 5 seconds without rolling off you win back half of your stake. Of course, rather than put money on the lemon we’d been staring at these jugs for an hour and a half trying to figure out what to do.

It hadn’t occurred to us to ask, and the landlord isn’t one to let people know what’s going on (there was no poster or sign to say tickets would be required for entry on Christmas Eve, no wonder it was so damn quiet in there).

Once we discovered the reason for the jugs we, as a man, emptied our pockets of 20 pence pieces into the jug, only vaguely trying to balance them (which is nigh on impossible to do anyway). There's only so much change in a pocket though, so I've hit the OXFAM website. Again, it's not much, but it's something. And it's always better to do something than nothing.
